‘JUNE/JULY’ is a Johannesburg street slang(Tsotsi Taal) phrase meaning ‘FEAR’

A two man exhibition by co-founders of Alphabet Zoo, Minenkulu Ngoyi and Isaac Zavale about the unlined feeling fear that South Africa’s have about our current political situation on the country. The exhibition explores issues such as Land distribution, Transformation, Racial and Religious stereotypes,colonization/decolonization. Ngoyi and Zavale’s use of colour, of the old South African flag, is a way of showing that South African politics have not changed much. Although time has past and leaders have changed.

“New Temples for New Times” showcases new pieces from Alice Edy’s ongoing body of work collectively titled “{VIRUS}”. These calligraphic texts are created by (re)writing sections of computer code, including malware, hack-ware, and various layers of system programming. In the process of copying out hundreds and hundreds of lines of digital script, fragments of other texts (poetry, philosophy, tweets, and adverts) are also written into the coding; thereby corrupting the files, so that the resultant texts are ultimately illegible to both humans and machines. The familiar becomes foreign, as the pieces challenge the viewer to read the act of writing, rather than the letters themselves.
