In September 2016 the Johannesburg kalashnikovv gallery led by MJ Turpin, Matthew Dean Dowdle and Alex Wittig moved to Berlin and opened a new branch in Viktoriakiez in Lichtenberg.
For their first Berlin collaboration, they have come together with the artist and architect Alina Mann and lawyer Julia Rost, who organize group exhibitions at different locations in Berlin using the name “Räume”.
For this first collaboration, the theme “NETZWERK” fits perfectly for various reasons:
Firstly, kalashnikovv gallery is networking in Berlin. Secondly, because Alina and Julia have been creating an artists’ network since their last group exhibition with 49 artists, and thirdly, because they have chosen six artists whose works vary around the subject of the network: Tanaz Modabber, Philipp Bünger, Xaert Pretorius, Justus Jager, Manfred Peckl and Alina Mann.
Something that most of the works have in common is the exploration of social interaction with a counterpart, objects of use, with art itself. For example, a kinetic work by the Iranian artist Tanaz Modabber is shown. “A Node’s Prosody” depicts a filigree, networked frame of metal and cable band, whose edges and knots are movable and which is constantly changing and interacting with the surrounding space and the observer. The Berlin painter, photographer and architect Philipp Bünger shows parts of his series Sarabande. Sarabande is a baroque formation dance that follows strict rules. The strongly fixated composed dancers seem currently frozen on Philipp’s photographs, whose dance, movements and interaction can only be imagined. The South African artist Xaert Pretorius depicts Tabble, a hermaphrodite version of a consumer object of art and art itself. Tabble has a structure reminiscent of an ammonite object, and invites the visitors to settle down at the table and have a conversation or network space. At the same time, Tabble is presented to the observer as an art object which never loses its quality of art.
Manfred Peckl, Alina Grobe and Justus Jager add their own conceptual framework into to NETZWERK space group exhibition with works never been shown in Germany to this stage.
Alina Mann:
Xaert Pretorius
geboren 1985 in Johannesburg

Justus Jager:
Doesn’t your dog deserve Painting? It is not a trick, it is a Justus Jager. Justus Jager is my middle name, the rest
is painting. Painting takes the waiting out of wanting.
Get the Jager habit. Think different. You are in good hands
with a Jager. Paint up your life.
Tanaz Moddebaar:
Born in Tehran, Iran, Tanaz Modabber studied at University of California, Berkeley, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture and Art. She completed her Architecture Master’s degree in 2009. She currently lives in Berlin where she has been creating a body of work that includes site-specific installations and intimate studio architectural works.
Philip Bünger
Prior to his artistic activity Philipp Bünger worked as an Architect in Moscow,
Rome and Berlin, but has prioritised Art as of early 2013. Since then
he has shown across Berlin and Bangkok in various solo exhibitions.
In addition to this he also collaborates with other Berlin-based artists
such as fashion designer ‘FRANZIUS’ and the music group ‘METEORITES’.
After immersing himself in the spirited climes of Bangkok in 2015,
where he stayed as artist in residence, he is now retracing artistic steps back to childhood impressions
and showing a selection of large-scale-ballpoint-pen-drawings of alpine fauna;
in disconnecting the depicted animals from their natural surroundings he exceeds to give the
portraits of the wild creatures an ornamental and by times symbolic character.
